Anesthesia Instructions
Arrival time:
Plan to arrive one hour before your surgery to meet the anesthesia team.
Preoperative Food and Drink:
Prior to having any form of anesthesia, you must abstain from food and drink for eight (8) hours prior to your procedure. You may have clear liquids, as defined below, four (4) hours prior to your procedure. Infants may have breast milk or formula up to four (4) hours prior to surgery to prevent clinical dehydration.
Clear Liquids:
Water
Black coffee
Tea without milk
Apple juice
Medications
You should plan to take all of your regular medications at the prescribed time with a small sip of water, even if this is on the morning of surgery. This applies to all medications EXCEPT:
1. Coumadin, Plavix and other blood thinners – your surgeon will give you specific instructions
2. Aspirin – many times this is OK, but your surgeon will give specific instructions
3. Insulin (Long & Short acting) – we will manage your blood sugar when you arrive at the facility
